15th Symposium: Economics for an Open Society
A Look Back at the 15th Denkwerkstatt Symposium for Managers on June 13, 2026
The 15th Denkwerkstatt Symposium for Managers was all about open dialogue. At the Landfriedhaus in Heidelberg, leaders from the worlds of business, academia, and civil society gathered to discuss the role companies play in promoting freedom, diversity, responsibility, and achievement in an open society. The discussion was based on the presentation of the new book „Economics for an Open Society“ by Dr. Martina Nieswandt and Dr. Roland Geschwill.
Rainer Kern, founder of Enjoy Jazz, kicked things off with his keynote address „Jazz as a Way of Life—Our Political Cultural Work“. The symposium that followed gave rise to an intense and multifaceted discussion: Participants shared their experiences from various industries and leadership roles, challenged existing viewpoints, and collectively developed new perspectives on the role of companies in a changing society. It was precisely this diversity of opinions and the willingness to constructively discuss controversial topics that gave the event its unique character.
Another highlight was the presentation by Stefan Kramer, President of the Thuringian Office for the Protection of the Constitution, who enriched the discussion on the significance of freedom and democracy by adding current social and political perspectives. During the light meal that followed, participants explored the ideas in more depth through one-on-one conversations, made new connections, and further developed their ideas.
The 15th symposium once again demonstrated what sets Denkwerkstatt apart: a safe space for in-depth discussions, the exchange of diverse perspectives, and a collective search for answers to the challenges of responsible corporate governance.
