Contested Zone: My Brother, the East and Hate by Ines Geipel, Klett-Cotta 2019. Ines Geipel has written an important book about the East of the FRG. It is a family history that dispels the Eastern myths of the AFD, the SED and the Left. It also shows our deep, Western lack of understanding of the individual psychograms of life in a double dictatorship. First the Nazis, then the SED dictatorship. That drove people crazy. They long for a seducer. Umkämpfte Zone is the history book of the FRG as seen through the eyes of someone who grew up in the unjust state. Ines Geipel receives the Lessing Prize of the City of Hamburg for critical journalism in May. Quite rightly!
